Yet More Vid Embedding
Yeah, yeah, but it's so much easier than actually writing something. Anyway, I've never been able to get into 30 Rock, but this clip had me laughing hard enough to fall off my chair: |

easy come, easy go
Of the check I got from phoenixpdx for my part of the work on the contract project, turns out that 92.5% all of it must immediately go into [paying utility bills and] catching up on credit card charges run up for the online course signups and the move. And that job which I managed to thread the obstacles and apply for last week? At least they're prompt with their follow-ups. Today I received an email that said they were " already in the final interview process and went forward with another candidate", before they received my application. #@%*$&@#^$~! WPI Run of "Bard of Avalon" Player Drop
I'm assuming you guys all know about the WPI Live Action Weekend. If not, here's a link: http://sfs.pagodalarp.com/events/207At any rate, I'll be helping GM Bard of Avalon at 1:00 pm on Saturday the 14th. Unfortunately, we just learned that one of our players won't be able to make it to the con, so we're left with a major role in need of filling. We're looking for a woman who'd be willing to play a romantic, somewhat naiive character with a significant love plot. If you think you or someone you know might be interested, please contact the head GM at cynwakefield[at]gmail[dot]com or myself at mllelaurel[at]yahoo.com. If you want more information on the game, it's available on the main con site. Or you can just ask me here. |

space, the final frontier
Thanks to some hands-on technomagic from phoenixpdx's partner J, that e-SATA drive that Steve sent north is working!! I've backed up not only the 60GB of video that's been squeeeezing my hard drive, but have copied all of the laptop's user files over to the 400GB storage drive, so now I can start trimming files on the local drive - and loading some of the music files that Steve had put on the hard drive for us to enjoy, plus the 2GB of new - mostly filk! - music that annathepiper brought us as a housewarming present. Squeeeeee! Current Mood: geeky |

King-Con I heard about King-Con just a few days ago, through Becky Cloonan’s blog. A comics convention within walking distance of my apartment, how could I not go?
It was a small con, even smaller (I think) than the first MoCCA Art Festival, but the vendors managed to fill up the lower level of the Brooklyn Lyceum. The Act-I-Vate crew had a table, of course, since a lot of them have studio space in the area. I held back from buying a lot of stuff, since money’s tight, and I’ve still got books from MoCCA 2008 that I haven’t gotten around to reading. I limited myself to a (half-price!) copy of Joel Priddy’s new book, The Gift of the Magi.
One nice feature of the dealer space was a row of benches along one wall, which gave me a place to sit down, pull out my sketchbook, and do these:

This reminded me of a Star Trek episode
OK, in this Ars Technica piece, some folks at BlueBeat selling MP3s of Beatles songs defended their actions on the theory that BlueBeat were the actual authors of this version of the song under their theory of "psycho-acoustic simulation." I kept flashing back to this bit of dialog from Classic Trek Episode Whom Gods Destroy: Marta: Shall I compare thee to a summer's day? / Thou art more lovely and more temperate. / Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May, / And summer's lease hath all too short a date. Garth: Liar! That was written by an Earthman names Shakespeare many centuries ago. Marta: That does not change the fact that I wrote it again this morning. |

More evidence that 2010 will be one of the ugliest elections in memory
I anticipate the number of serious primary challenges in both parties to be unprecedented in recent memory -- except for those old enough to remember the actual New Deal. A reading of the top items at Open Left today shows that progressives regard the passage of the House healthcare reform bill as weak tea indeed. Oh, they will support it. But it highlights the need to pressure the so-called "moderate" wing by mounting serious primary challenges similar to the recent challenge by conservatives to the Republican nominee in NY-23. The situation has some similarity to the New Deal. Following Democratic wins in 1932, the Democratic party faced an internal challenge: how progressive did it want to be, and did third party such as the Socialist party offer viable alternatives. Roosevelt was able to stave off significant losses in 1934 by embracing some of the more progressive policies of Huey Long, who continued to pressure Roosevelt from the left until his assassination in 1935. Here, the current economic and social crises, combined with the ability of the Internet to harness people in collective action, is giving rise to extremely well-organized and well-funded movements in both parties. This is not necessarily a bad thing, given my personal political proclivities. |

we can haz filk!
We got a good turnout for Saturday's house filk. Fourteen folks showed up at various times. Thanks to everyone who attended and contributed energy, good music, goodies - many home made! - for the potluck table, etc. :-) Folks started arriving around 12:30pm and the last of the locals left around 9:30pm. We'll likely have another house filk sometime in 2010, and our new abode feels nicely warmed by the music and friendship. Your tired, thankful, contented hostess. Planned Parenthood is made of awesome.
Long and short of it: My PCP is an hour away. I needed to get on a new birth control pill. I mixed up the appointment time, and therefore missed my appointment. I need to start taking the pills on Sunday. This was a problem. I'd heard that Planned Parenthood could dole out prescriptions, and not only do they take my insurance, but also walk-ins from 9-3 on Fridays. And it's ten minutes from my house. After getting through security, despite a full waiting room, I only had to wait for about twenty minutes before being seen. It was low-fuss, the nurses were very nice and very efficient, and it was basically a matter of: "No health problems?" "Nope. Just wanna be back on the pill." "Here are some mandatory questions." "I will answer them." "You are not at risk. Yay!" "Yay!" So, less than two hours total (that's including getting through security and new patient intake procedure) and $15 later, I was handed a prescription for the pills I needed for a year. I dropped it off at CVS, and can pick it up at my earliest convenience. Sweet. |

Room-share at Intercon J?
I posted a similar question last year. I'll post the question and make the offer again this year. 1) The con rate for the rooms at the hotel is based on an occupancy of 2. 2) I typically attend Intercon as a coterie of 1. 3) Tentative travel plans are from Thursday - Sunday or Thursday - Monday So, I'm wondering if anyone wants to do a room-share (ie. split the cost of a room (or suite) at the Radisson). crossposted to ne_larp |

I Hear News No One else Can Hear
See, this is what I see when I watch cable talk shows. Vacuous Hostcritter: Hello, I'm pretending this is news when it's just people spouting off in predictable ways because our network realized that is much cheaper than investing money in actual reporting. I have a Republican pundit and a Democratic pundit here to blather in highly predictable ways about the election results. Republican pundit: How is it possible to see an election where Obama's party gains another seat in the House of Representatives as anything less than a stunning rebuke of Obamacare and the entire Democratic Congress? I will repeat this much louder, with some pejoratives about anyone who could possibly disagree with this analysis. Democratic pundit: Because I'm a Democrat, I am a totally insecure wussy who secretly believes you're right even though I can't explain why. So I will absolutely say nothing about how voters in a district Democrats could not win when the anti-Republican wave crested in '08 rejected the "Death Panel" candidate in favor of "Mr. Milquetoast I will support the Obama agenda." Instead, I'll say that the lose of two governor races where the winning candidates avoided the Republican brand like the plague doesn't really show anything about Obama. But I'll say it in such a way that everyone watching will know I don't really believe it. VHC: Smelling blood, I will ask the DP a leading question framed in the way that shows the RP obviously has a point. DP: Being a wuss with major insecurities, I will try to make a point about how the Republican who won with the biggest margin actually sent around a flyer saying the Sarah Palin robocalls were not associated with my campaign -- RP: What a steaming and wretched pile of feces! Everyone can see how the fact that Conservatives cost their party another seat in a district Rs have held for more than 130 years means that in 2010 districts like this will vote in droves for the type of candidate this district just rejected. VHC: That makes sense. DP, is there anything Democrats can do to stop this overwhelming tide of dissatisfaction expressed by voting for Democrats instead of Republicans. RP: I will loudly interrupt to say that the only thing that could save Democrats is for them to reject the policies that got them elected and embrace the policies that a traditionally Republican district just rejected. DP: Because I am such an insecure wuss, I will get even more defensive and twisty in my body language and say that maybe Democrats should back away from everything our constituents keep saying they want in polls and in letters and start to crawl back to the conservatives who will never vote for us. VHC: RP, would some grovelling and retreat from core principles be enough to stave off another terrible election with winning more seats in Congress. RP: As if! Nothing can save the Democrats from winning even more seats in 2010 unless they do as exactly as I say! DP: (breaking down completely) It's true! (sob) We're done for! RP: BOW BEFORE ME YOU MISERABLE DEMOCRAT WORM! DP: (Dropping to knees and trembling) Oh mercy, master! Mercy! I am a miserable worm! I promise to stop doing the things that keep winning us House seats so that our supporters stay home in disgust in 2010! Just please stop saying everything with such arrogant certainty in your voice! (sobs hysterically and begins kissing RP's toes) mercy . . . . mercy . . . . RP: Wuss. VHC: We'll be back after this. |

General Update
I'm busy recovering from a cold, which was likely a bit of the flu. I think I had a fever and that it broke last night or this morning. Still job hunting. T-Mobile has allowed as how they've probably well and truly lost my data, and I should be getting a $100 debit card by 14 days after October 29. I can live with this. I've got 90-95% of my contact info back via folks sending me what they have, and I can reconstruct most of the rest. I didn't have photos or a to do list. I had fairly few bookmarks. I'm now dealing with, or will be dealing with, four lawyers: 1. The man who did our Wills/POAs/Living Wills/Health Proxies, as we need to update them. 2. An Estates Lawyer for my father's estate. 3. The lawyers my father used, as they've got the information that the estates lawyer needs. 4. The lawyer that the nursing home is working with to get my brother and I guardianship for our mother. None of this is fast. It involves multiple phone calls and such, and a fair amount of travel. I missed... um, at least 3 Halloween parties in favor of something taking definite precedence, lordess and Steve's wedding. Lovely site, lovely bride, handsome groom. Right now, am contemplating whether to medicate, and if so, with what, and what food to eat, and generally enjoying not feeling like my skin's stretched too tightly over my face. |

Once Again, The Content Industry Prediction Of Doom Bombed Big Time
Hey everybody, remember when the DVR was going to kill television and the head of Time Warner's television network seriously suggested that we had a "contrac" to watch commercials? Turns out not so much. Now the same people (same company even!) wants insists that if it can't control your television outputs, can't filter the internet, and must control online distribution through TV Everywhere, then the content industry is doomed. |
