    Just so everybody's aware:

My grandmother in New Orleans is seriously ill. (I will not say dying. Others have.)

My parents are already there; I'm flying down Saturday night and will be there through Monday morning. I may be around online some during that time, but don't expect to see me much.

Any prayers and good thoughts are appreciated.

    Holmes Review from the NYT
    http://movies.nytimes.com/2009/12/25/movies/25sherlock.html?th&emc=th

    1) Is this the first use of the term "steam punk" in mainstream media?

    2) I think the reviewer is off in a number of places. Doyle's Holmes was a physical superman as well as a mental giant, able to out shoot the dreaded Tiger Moran, outwrestle Moriarty, straighten a bent steel poker, and perform other prodigious physical feats.

Nor is Irene Adler and invented character here. She appears in "A Scandal in Bohemia" as the only woman ever to best Holmes, thus winning his undying devotion and becoming a fairly common character in Holmes mythology.

The previews and the reviews have made this look promising enough for me to try it. The action may make it palatable for Aaron.

"The simultaneous selling of securities to customers and shorting them because they believed they were going to default is the most cynical use of credit information that I have ever seen," said Sylvain R. Raynes, an expert in structured finance at R & R Consulting in New York. "When you buy protection against an event that you have a hand in causing, you are buying fire insurance on someone else’s house and then committing arson."

    Merry Slash
I have started on the next character sheet. I really need to pick up on these. I'm gonna try to get three done this weekend and another three next weekend. That should get me back on track.

In any case, here is another paragraph to share. I figure I'll keep posting samples of characters from Slash until my demands are met. Again, this sample is safe for work. I'll see what I can do about posting the NSFW stuff later, but besides being really horrible it contains game spoilers.

    Stardate 2258.6 .

Lieutenant Spock was disquieted. He was annoyed at the disquiet, and was unhappy with being annoyed. He should not have to deal with these distracting emotions, and that bothered him. Being a Vulcan, he should not have emotions at all, but his half-human heritage had a horrible way of creeping up on him when he least wanted it. And that was disgruntling. But perhaps there was more at work here which he had not yet realized or admitted to himself. Something was wrong. And that troubled him.

I don't think this one is as wretched as the James Kirk one, but it does get its point across nicely.

Edit: I just had to read the Wikipedia entry for Pon Farr. Shudder. It was enlightening though as it gave more examples from fan fiction than it did from cannon.

    Home Sweet Home
    We're in at last.

We actually moved in yesterday but I didn't have energy beyond a brief Twitter update. Now we've spent our first night in the house and finally the reality of the move has hit me.

It's been a long, often stressful, occasionally seemingly endless process. I can't remember another such extended period of stress. Even writing up my Ph.D and job hunting in 2002 weren't as draining. But now we're in.

    At last.

Best wishes to all for a very happy holiday, spent with those you love, and who love you. It's the least we all deserve, isn't it?

This has got to count as idol worship for Christians, right?
This story (my thanks to [info]antoniseb for the link) captured a C-Span clip wherein a fellow from Georgia called Senator Barraso to explain that he had been praying that God would put the shine on Senator Byrd, and when Senator Inhoffe failed to show this morning to vote against the health care bill, he was worried that God had gotten a bit confused and accidentally whacked Inhoffe.

All I can say is "pray louder, perhaps your god is eating, or out for a stroll, or relieving himself? Is he not a god?"

    Champions MMO: Free Demo
I see that Cryptic has done what they should've tried 6 months ago: Released a free demo. Now you can play in the opening area up to Level 15 for free. As I've said many times, I like the system and would be happy to see folks try it out.

    Snakesmas!
So, I took holiday photos of the babies (they're four and a half months old now!) and thought it would be nice to send some to their breeder, who has been wonderful throughout the bumpy road to happy and healthy snakes.

Question is, which ones to send? I want to send one of each snake, so I've narrowed it down to three each:

It's become increasingly apparent that Howl is much more human-centric, always checking to see what I'm doing and if I'm accessible, while Calcifer is just... Haz-centric. He's more interested in his surroundings than people, but adores me when given the chance.

Both make for photogenic babies. =) They've gotten so big - I should photograph them with a quarter for scale.

    since you asked...
Based on my commenting on her "resistance meme" journal entry, the lovely and talented [info]phoenixpdx responded with several interesting questions, a month or so back. Such as:

    1. When did you first get involved in filk? How did that happen?

    2. What's your favorite favorite FAVORITE food?

    3. Can you ride a bicycle? When was the last time you did?

    4. If you had no constraints at all (not money, time, energy, etc), what would you do with your time?

    5. Tell me a funny anecdote about one (or both) of the children, please?

Link Harvest: David Pogue on E-Book DRM
    http://www.nytimes.com/2009/12/17/technology/personaltech/17pogue-email.html?_r=1&8cir&emc=cir

Interesting experiment by an author. He determined after a year that (a) having no DRM did dramatically increase the availability of the book for free; but, (b) This had no impact on sales, or possibly a slight positive effect. As the author notes, this is hardly scientific "proof" about anything, but it is interesting enough to suggest we ought to get proof.

    AGH. UNIVERSE, STOP IT.
Out of curiosity, I looked on the AKC site to see if there were any registered Papillon breeders nearby. Just for fun.

There are three within 200 miles. Two in NY, which are show breeders ($1500-$2k a puppy).

    One in Holden.

    A pet breeder ($500-$600 a puppy).

Who has puppies available right now.

    Well, mid-january. But still.

WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS TO ME, UNIVERSE

    Sigh
Made it to work safe and sound. Had to finish digging out the car this morning. They haven't plowed our court yet, so I had to dig a trench from my already excavated car to the parts of the court tamped down by the other drivers. I'm sure they'll plow the court today, leaving me a wall of snow and ice between the court and my driveway.

Roads were ok in general. Didn't see a lot of abandoned cars.

L was nice enough to make me a sandwich for lunch, but I left my lunch at home so I have have to brave the roads again mid day. I knew I'd have to go out today anyway. We ran out of diet coke at around noon yesterday. That means I went though six litres in a day and a half. Wow.

    What I want for Christmas
The last few months have cemented it.

    I want a Papillon.

They might not be very popular, but I don't care. It came as a surprise to me, as I'm very much a big dog person, but when I whittled my lifestyle needs down, these little guys have matched up in every way.

My three base requirements for a dog are as follows:
    - Between 10 and 35 pounds so that I can easily carry/transport it in an emergency
    - Have at least marginal grooming requirements that motivate me to be aware of its hygiene, low-allergen breeds preferred
    - Be highly intelligent and receptive to training/obedience

Papillons are amazing dogs. I've always loved them, but the more of them I've met recently, the more in love with the breed I've fallen. They're toy spaniels, essentially, meaning they're about a foot at the shoulders and 12-15 pounds but have the work ethic/desire to please of their hunting relatives.

They're also in the top ten breeds of The Intelligence of Dogs, a study that measured both the ease of training and obedience level of the AKC recognized breeds.

So, easy to train, motivated, capable of entertaining themselves, human-oriented, cute as hell!, single-coated, and ridiculously loyal dogs. And it's extremely easy to train them to be near-silent, too. I want a dog whose brain I can really work and then reward them by letting them snuggle into my lap.

This is the breed for me.

I know I'm not ready for a dog yet. Not this year. But when I get a more stable situation, it's going to happen.

Until then, I can only wait and fidget.

[info]raging_apathy: It can be tough to guesstimate. Take a yardstick and measure it.

You know what's fun to do when you're snowed in? Bake stuff.

I promised a couple of people these recipes, so here they are. Both come from the Grain-Free Gourmet cookbook. (Find out more about it here!) I got this cookbook as a gift from a friend when I started the South Beach Diet, as a lot of the grain-free stuff in here is also low in carbohydrates.

    Sesame-Dijon Crackers )

Edited to add: I tried the Basic Biscuits today also, using margarine instead of butter, and they are delish.

    The Health Care Bill
A lot of my friends are skeptical about the Senate health care bill, and I don't blame them for that, but I'll join [info]barking_iguana in recommending "Liberal Pragmatist's" take and say that it will do a lot of good and deserves to pass.

Now obviously, since I'm employed by the Democratic Party, I have a vested interest in seeing a health care reform succeed (although I doubt it will have much political impact on the state level). I also don't know how much weight to place on the (odious) anti-abortion provisions, since I won't be directly affected by them. Still, I'll stick my neck out and say the House and Senate health-care bills deserve to pass, and it will be a great day for the nation when some combination of the two becomes law.

In the meantime, please tell me why I'm full of shit in comments.
